Fishing Cat
Prionailurus viverrinus
Prionailurus viverrinus is a stocky, roughly twice-domestic-cat-sized predator of the wetlands, mangroves and reedbeds of South and Southeast Asia, and it is one of the few cats that genuinely likes water. It swims strongly, dives, and hunts fish by crouching at the water's edgeโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike most felines, Fishing Cats can swim underwater and dive after fish, making them uniquely adapted among wild cats.
- Fishing cats have been observed in and around Colombo, hunting in the city's canals and marshy patches, making it one of the few endangered wild cats living inside a capital city. The claim that they tap the water's surface to imitate insects and draw fish up has been reported by observers but is not well documented, and should be treated with caution. Their short, thick tail acts as a rudder in water rather than the long balancing tail of an arboreal cat. They are strong enough to take fish weighing a couple of kilos and have been recorded killing young deer and dogs.
