During migration, vast schools of flagtail prochilodus can dramatically alter river environments by stirring up sediments and aiding in nutrient cycling.
Flagtail prochilodus undertake spectacular upstream migrations, sometimes traveling hundreds of kilometers to spawn. They are known locally as 'curimatã' or 'bocachico' and are a staple in regional fisheries. Their visually striking tail has made them a popular species in public aquariums.
