- Flashlight fish can shut off their bioluminescent light instantly by rotating a special organ or covering it with dark skin, making them almost invisible in the dark ocean.
- Flashlight fish can 'blink' their lights to communicate with each other or confuse predators. They are rarely seen by divers because they spend most of their time in deep or dimly lit waters. The light they emit is produced by bacteria living in a special pouch under each eye.
