- Despite being one of the most venomous snakes in Africa, the Gaboon Viper is responsible for surprisingly few bites on humans due to its reclusive and docile nature.
- It has the longest fangs of any snake β nearly five centimetres β and one of the largest venom yields. Despite that, it is exceptionally placid and reluctant to bite. Its camouflage is so effective it will not move even when trodden on, which is how most bites happen. Unusually for a viper, it holds onto prey after striking instead of letting go and tracking it.
