Did you know?
- Despite their abundance and adaptability, Galahs can form hybrid offspring with other cockatoo species in the wild, such as the Major Mitchell's Cockatoo.
- Galahs will occasionally hybridise with Major Mitchell's cockatoo where their ranges meet, producing birds that combine the pink of one with the crest of the other. Their flocks contain a large surplus of non-breeding young birds, which spend several years in loose bands before they take a hollow β competition for hollows is intense and is one of the few real limits on the population. Because they are so abundant, they are one of very few Australian cockatoos that can be legally culled in some states, while simultaneously being protected as native wildlife. Galahs pick up human speech reasonably well and were commonly kept as pets long before their legal status was tidied up.
