Giant Armadillo
Priodontes maximus

Did you know?
- Despite their size, giant armadillos are rarely seen in the wild due to their secretive, nocturnal habits.
- Unlike the three-banded armadillo, a giant armadillo cannot roll into a ball; its armour is far too rigid, and its defence is to dig itself out of sight, which it can do with astonishing speed. Camera-trap work in the Pantanal found well over 20 vertebrate species using giant armadillo burrows, which stay cool and humid and are used as refuges from heat and fire. Reproduction is extremely slow β usually a single young, born after a long gestation, at low frequency β so the species cannot absorb hunting pressure. Its burrows are large enough for a person to crawl into.
