- Despite their intimidating appearance, giant deep-sea isopods are harmless scavengers and play a crucial role in recycling nutrients on the ocean floor.
- Giant deep-sea isopods can survive for long periods without food, sometimes going several years between meals. They have compound eyes that are highly sensitive to low light, helping them detect movement in the deep sea. When threatened, they can roll up into a ball, similar to their terrestrial relatives, the pill bugs.
