- Despite their size, giant gouramis can be surprisingly gentle and are often kept as companion animals in large aquariums.
- Giant gouramis can recognize their owners and sometimes beg for food at the water's surface. They are able to survive in very poor water conditions due to their ability to breathe atmospheric air. In some regions, they are trained to keep aquatic weed growth under control in reservoirs.
