- Although they are classified as bears, giant pandas' closest genetic relatives are actually the spectacled bears of South America.
- Giant pandas have a unique pseudo-thumb, an enlarged wrist bone, that helps them grasp bamboo stalks. Despite their bulk, pandas are excellent climbers and can swim well. Baby pandas are born extremely small and pink, weighing just about 100 grams at birth.
