- Despite their grandeur and symbolic status, fewer than 100 mature individuals are believed to survive in the wild today.
- Giant Sable Antelope horns are among the longest of any antelope species, and both sexes carry them. The animal is a national symbol of Angola, appearing on currency and official emblems. They are highly elusive and were once thought extinct during Angola's civil war until they were rediscovered in 2004.
