- Almost everything known about giant squid comes from specimens washed ashore or found in the stomachs of sperm whales.
- Its eyes are the largest ever measured in any animal — about the size of a dinner plate. They are probably that big to spot the bioluminescent glow of an approaching sperm whale, not to find prey. Its beak is the only hard part of its body, and beaks in whale stomachs were long the main proof it existed. It was not filmed alive until 2004.
