- A giraffe's heart is about 60 cm (2 feet) long and weighs up to 11 kg (25 lbs) to pump blood all the way to its brain.
- A giraffe's heart can weigh up to 11 kilograms (25 pounds) and generates double the blood pressure of most large mammals, a necessity for pumping blood up its long neck to the brain. Despite their towering height, giraffes require less than 30 minutes of sleep per day, often taking short naps while standing. Unlike most mammals, giraffes are unable to yawn, a trait linked to their unique respiratory anatomy. Their tongues, which can extend up to 45 centimeters (18 inches), are prehensile and darkly pigmented, protecting them from sunburn as they forage for leaves.
