Giraffe
Giraffa camelopardalis
The giraffe is the world's tallest land animal, easily recognized by its extremely long neck and legs, as well as its distinctive spotted coat. Native to the savannas and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, giraffes use their height to browse leaves and shoots high up in trees…
Did you know?
- A giraffe's heart is about 60 cm (2 feet) long and weighs up to 11 kg (25 lbs) to pump blood all the way to its brain.
- Giraffes have a tongue that can reach up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length and is darkly pigmented to prevent sunburn. Each giraffe's coat pattern is unique, much like a human fingerprint. Despite their long necks, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans—seven.
