- All Golden Lion Tamarins living in the wild today descend from just a few dozen individuals, making genetic diversity a major conservation concern.
- Down to a few hundred animals in the 1970s, it was saved by zoo breeding, reintroduction, and the planting of forest corridors to reconnect isolated groups. About a third of the wild population descends from captive-bred animals. Twins are the norm, and the father does much of the carrying. It weighs well under a kilogram despite the lion-like mane.
