Golden Mantella
Mantella aurantiaca
The Golden Mantella is a small, vividly colored amphibian native to the rainforests of Madagascar. Recognized for its bright orange to yellow skin, this tiny frog acts as a warning to predators about its toxicity. Golden Mantellas are terrestrial and are most often found near swโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike many other toxic frogs, Golden Mantellas acquire their toxins from specific insects in their native habitat, and captive individuals often lose their toxicity.
- Golden Mantellas secrete toxins from their skin as a defense against predators. Males gather in groups during the breeding season and call in unison to attract females. Their bright coloration is an example of aposematism, warning potential predators of their toxicity.
