Golden Mole
Chrysochloris asiatica

Did you know?
- Despite their name, golden moles are not closely related to true moles and belong to their own unique mammalian order, Afrosoricida.
- Golden mole hair is the only known mammal fur that is structurally iridescent, and it appears to be a side effect of hairs built for slipping through sand. Grant's golden mole locates termite mounds by head-dipping to sense vibrations, then sand-swims straight to them across open dune with no tunnel at all. Two species were rediscovered by environmental DNA sampling of beach sand after decades without a confirmed sighting - De Winton's golden mole was found again in 2023 this way.
