Golden Poison Dart Frog
Phyllobates terribilis
Phyllobates terribilis, restricted to a small area of Pacific lowland rainforest in Colombia's Cauca department, is the most toxic vertebrate known. A single wild adult, about 5 cm long, can carry around one milligram of batrachotoxin - enough, in principle, to kill a large numbโฆ
Did you know?
- Captive Golden Poison Dart Frogs lose their toxicity because they do not consume the same toxic insects found in the wild.
- Only three Phyllobates species were ever actually used for darts, and terribilis is the one potent enough to be used without heating the frog first. Golden poison frogs are attentive parents: the male guards the eggs and then carries the tadpoles on his back to water-filled sites. The batrachotoxin the frog uses is chemically the same class of poison found in the skin and feathers of New Guinea's pitohui birds, which acquire it from beetles of the same family.
