Golden Trevally
Gnathanodon speciosus
The Golden Trevally is a striking marine fish recognized by its bright golden-yellow body adorned with distinctive black vertical bars, especially prominent in juveniles. It is a fast-swimming, schooling species commonly found in shallow coastal waters, lagoons, and around reefsβ¦
Did you know?
- Golden Trevally juveniles are so bold that they sometimes approach divers, mistaking them for large marine animals to follow for protection.
- Juvenile Golden Trevallies are famous for their tendency to swim alongside or beneath larger marine animals, such as groupers, rays, and even sharks, mimicking their movements for protection. Their bodies can change from bright gold with black bars as juveniles to a silvery gold with faint markings as they mature. The species uses a highly protrusible mouth to create suction and pull prey from sandy or rocky substrates.
