Epinephelus itajara
The Goliath grouper is one of the largest bony fish found in the Atlantic Ocean, easily recognized by its massive body, broad head, and mottled brown or yellowish skin. These formidable predators can reach lengths of up to 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) and weigh as much as 360 kilogramsβ¦
Did you know?
- Goliath groupers can sometimes be seen 'gulp-feeding' on entire small sharks, demonstrating their impressive predatory power.
- Goliath groupers can create loud booming sounds with their swim bladders to communicate or defend territory. They have been documented preying on large marine animals, including sharks and sea turtles. These fish are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning they start life as females and some later change to males.
