- The Goliath Heron can catch and swallow fish up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs) in weight—sometimes nearly a quarter of its own body mass!
- Goliath Herons are solitary and fiercely territorial, rarely tolerating other herons nearby. Their deep barking call is distinctive and can be heard over long distances. Unlike many other herons, they are poor fliers and are usually seen wading rather than flying.
