- Despite being called 'gray,' this frog can change its color to green or brown depending on its environment for camouflage.
- Female gray treefrogs prefer males with longer calls, and because calling is metabolically brutal - among the most expensive activities measured in any ectotherm - call length honestly advertises a male's condition. The two cryptic species can be told apart in the lab by measuring red blood cells, since the tetraploid's cells are about 1.3 times larger. A frozen gray treefrog can be handled like a small ice cube and will still recover.
