Great Crested Newts are protected under both UK and European law, making it illegal to disturb or harm them or their habitats.
Great Crested Newts can regenerate lost limbs, tails, and even parts of their heart and eyes. Their eggs are individually wrapped in pond plant leaves by the female for protection. Despite their terrestrial lifestyle outside breeding season, they are skilled swimmers during spring and early summer.
