Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus
Bubo virginianus is the most widespread owl in the Americas and by some measures the most powerful, with a crushing grip estimated at around 130 kg per square centimetre in the talons - enough to sever the spine of prey larger than itself. It is a generalist to an almost absurd β¦

- The Great Horned Owl is one of the only animals known to regularly prey upon skunks, thanks to its extremely limited sense of smell.
- Great horned owls are the primary predator of the peregrine falcon in North America, and reintroduction programmes have lost young peregrines to them. Their flight feathers have comb-like leading edges and velvety upper surfaces that break up the turbulence responsible for wing noise, making the attack essentially silent below about 2 kHz. They cannot move their eyes in their sockets - the eyes are tubular and fixed - which is why the neck rotates roughly 270 degrees instead.
