- The Great Spotted Woodpecker can drum up to 10-16 times per second, producing a sound that can be heard over long distances.
- Great Spotted Woodpeckers have an incredibly strong beak and a shock-absorbing skull that allows them to peck on wood at high speeds without injury. They often wedge nuts into tree crevices to hammer them open, a behavior known as 'anvilling.' Both males and females take turns incubating eggs and feeding the chicks.
