- At one point, the Greater Adjutant was considered a nuisance in urban areas, but now its largest breeding colonies are protected by local communities as a conservation success story.
- Greater adjutants nest colonially in the tallest trees in villagers' yards, so protecting the species means persuading individual households not to fell a single tree. The bird's stiff, measured walk is what earned it the name adjutant, after the drill-step of a military officer. Purnima Devi Barman won the 2022 Whitley Gold Award for the Hargila Army, one of the clearest cases of a species saved by shifting community attitudes rather than by fencing off habitat.
