Did you know?
- Despite their large size, greater kudus are remarkably silent and elusive, often going unnoticed even in relatively open habitats.
- Kudu ate their way into a famous controversy in the 1980s when South African researcher Wouter van Hoven proposed that acacias in overcrowded kudu enclosures were pumping tannins into their leaves and releasing ethylene to warn neighbouring trees, effectively poisoning the antelope. Kudu horns have been used as ceremonial and musical instruments for millennia, including the shofar in some Jewish traditions. Despite their size, kudu are among the most difficult large antelope to see in thick bush, and hunters call them the gray ghost.
