- Despite their large size and snake-like appearance, Greater Sirens are completely harmless to humans and play an important role in controlling aquatic invertebrate populations.
- Greater Sirens can estivate for months by burrowing into mud when their aquatic habitats dry up. They communicate with a series of clicks, which is unusual among salamanders. Their external gills are highly efficient for oxygen exchange in low-oxygen environments.
