Did you know?
- Unlike most insects, the Green Darner Dragonfly migrates in swarms that can number in the millions, similar to some species of birds.
- Adult green darners can raise their body temperature by whirring their wings before dawn, letting them start hunting before rivals warm up. The migration operates on a temperature cue: darners head north when it warms past roughly 9 C, and south when nights cool below about 15 C. Dragonfly nymphs of this species also breathe and jet-propel themselves by drawing water in and out of the rectum.
