Did you know?
- Despite their common name, not all Green Iguanas are green—some can be blue, red, orange, or even lavender depending on age, location, and mood.
- Green iguanas are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath underwater for up to 30 minutes, an ability that helps them escape predators by diving into rivers. They possess a parietal eye, a light-sensitive organ on the top of their head, which helps detect changes in light and shadow, alerting them to aerial threats. A common misconception is that iguanas are solitary creatures; in fact, they often live in small groups, especially during the breeding season when males establish territories. During the dry season, female green iguanas travel to sandy areas to lay their eggs, which ensures optimal incubation conditions.
