Did you know?
- Despite their slow movements on land, Green Sea Turtles can swim at speeds up to 35 km/h (22 mph) in short bursts when threatened.
- Green Sea Turtles can hold their breath for several hours, a trait that allows them to rest underwater without surfacing frequently. They exhibit natal homing, meaning females return to the same beach where they hatched to lay their eggs, an instinctive behavior driven by geomagnetic cues. Despite their aquatic lifestyle, these turtles must bask in the sun on land to regulate their body temperature, a behavior shared by few other marine reptiles. Interestingly, their jaw structure is specially adapted to grazing on seagrass, which requires a finely serrated edge to efficiently shear plant material.
