- The tongue of the Green Woodpecker can extend up to 10 cm beyond its beak, allowing it to reach deep into ant nests.
- Green Woodpeckers specialize in feeding on ants, using their long, sticky tongues to extract them from nests. They are known for their distinctive, laughing call and are less likely than other woodpeckers to drum on trees. Despite being strong fliers, they prefer to hop on the ground when searching for food.
