- Guiana dolphins were recognized as a distinct species only in 2007, after previously being grouped with the closely related tucuxi dolphin.
- Guiana dolphins use echolocation to hunt fish in murky estuarine waters. They have been observed engaging in playful behaviors such as surfing on boat wakes. Unlike many other dolphins, they prefer shallow, brackish waters close to the shore.
