- Guppies are named after Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who discovered the species in Trinidad in 1866.
- Female guppies prefer novel or rare male colour patterns, which keeps unusual males in the population and stops any single pattern taking over - a rare form of negative frequency-dependent sexual selection. Guppies can be tested for numerical ability and discriminate between small quantities, and they show individually consistent boldness that qualifies as personality. A single female can store viable sperm from several males and produce broods of mixed paternity from one mating season.
