Hairy-nosed Wombat
Lasiorhinus latifrons / Lasiorhinus krefftii
The hairy-nosed wombat is a robust, burrowing marsupial native to Australia, recognized for its distinctive hairy snout and strong, stocky build. There are two species: the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) and the critically endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Womโฆ
Did you know?
- There are fewer than 300 Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats left in the wild, making it one of the rarest large mammals on Earth.
- Hairy-nosed wombats have cube-shaped droppings, which helps mark their territory. Their burrows can be over 20 meters long and up to 3.5 meters deep. They have one of the slowest metabolic rates of any mammal, an adaptation to their dry habitats.
