Hairy-nosed Wombat
Lasiorhinus latifrons / Lasiorhinus krefftii
The wombat is the only animal on Earth that produces cube-shaped droppings, and it is less a curiosity than a solution. The cubes are moulded by the intestine itself, whose walls vary in elasticity around their circumference โ stretching in some places, staying stiff in others โโฆ
Did you know?
- There are fewer than 300 Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats left in the wild, making it one of the rarest large mammals on Earth.
- Wombats are the only animals that produce cube-shaped droppings, moulded by an intestine with unevenly elastic walls. The cubes matter because they do not roll off the rocks the wombat stacks them on as scent markers. Its pouch faces backwards so that digging does not fill it with dirt. Its rump is armoured with cartilage, and it can crush a predator's skull against the roof of its burrow.
