Hammerhead Shark
Sphyrna lewini
The Hammerhead Shark, particularly the species Sphyrna lewini, is renowned for its unique head structure, the cephalofoil, which resembles a flattened hammer. This adaptation is not merely for appearance; it enhances the shark's sensory capabilities by spreading its eyes far apaโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike most sharks, hammerheads are known to form large daytime schools, sometimes gathering by the hundreds in certain regions.
- Hammerhead sharks have a unique method of reproduction known as viviparity, where the young develop inside the mother and are born live, unlike many other fish species that lay eggs. The great hammerhead, a relative of Sphyrna lewini, can detect a prey's heartbeat from several miles away, thanks to its highly sensitive electroreceptors. Another fascinating aspect is their ability to 'tan'; hammerheads can darken their skin when exposed to sunlight, a trait shared with very few other marine species. Despite their fearsome appearance, hammerheads are generally not aggressive towards humans and are more curious than threatening.
