- The hartebeest's scientific name, Alcelaphus buselaphus, once referred to multiple subspecies found across Africa, but some are now extinct or critically endangered.
- Hartebeests have some of the most unusual horns among antelopes, with both sexes sporting S-shaped structures. Despite their awkward appearance, they are highly alert and can run for long distances without tiring. Hartebeests have excellent vision and a keen sense of smell, helping them avoid predators.
