Did you know?
- The solenodon’s closest relatives went extinct millions of years ago, making it a living fossil.
- The solenodon's snout pivots on a true ball-and-socket joint - no other mammal has one there - giving it a range of motion closer to a probe than a nose. Solenodons appear to be immune to their own venom but not to that of other solenodons, and captive animals have died after fights. Females have only two teats, positioned almost on the buttocks, and young cling to them and are dragged along behind the mother.
