- Unlike most bats, the Honduran white bat's colonies almost always consist of just one male and several females, forming a small, close-knit social group.
- A single tent lasts only days to weeks before the leaf dies, so the colony must build new ones constantly and a group cycles through many roosts. The carotenoid finding was a genuine surprise: mammals were thought to be poor at accumulating these pigments, and the bat's yellow ears turned out to hold concentrations rivalling those in bird feathers and fish skin. Honduran white bats eat almost exclusively a single species of fig, making them one of the most dietarily specialised bats known.
