Horned Puffin
Fratercula corniculata
The horned puffin is the Pacific counterpart of the Atlantic puffin, and it takes its name from a small fleshy spike of dark skin that rises above each eye. It is not a horn in any structural sense but a seasonal ornament, like the bright plates of the bill, which are grown for โฆ
Did you know?
- Horned puffins spend most of their lives far out at sea, sometimes not touching land for months at a time.
- Its "horn" is a fleshy spike above each eye, grown for the breeding season and shed with the bright bill plates afterwards. Like all puffins it effectively flies underwater, chasing fish with short, powerful wingbeats. Backward-facing spines on its tongue and palate let it hold a row of fish crosswise while catching more. Unlike Atlantic puffins it nests in rock crevices rather than digging burrows in turf.
