- Despite being named after Houston, this toad is now extinct in the city itself due to urban development.
- Houston toads have a distinctive trill call that can be heard over long distances during breeding season. They rely on ephemeral pools that form after heavy rains for successful reproduction. The Houston toad was the first amphibian placed on the U.S. Endangered Species List.
