- Individual Humphead wrasses are known to recognize and approach divers, suggesting a high level of intelligence and curiosity.
- Humphead wrasse are among the few reef fish that will eat crown-of-thorns starfish, and their loss on Indo-Pacific reefs has been linked to starfish outbreaks. Individuals are curious and will approach divers repeatedly, which is exactly why they are easy to spear and why they are so valuable to dive tourism alive. The male's hump grows with age and dominance, and a large male can turn a vivid electric blue-green.
