Hyacinth Macaw
Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus
Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus is the largest flying parrot in the world at a metre from head to tail tip, cobalt blue with a bare gold face patch, and its bill is powerful enough to shear through the shells of the palm nuts that make up almost its entire diet - it can crack acuri aโฆ
Did you know?
- Despite their size and strength, Hyacinth Macaws are gentle giants and often use their feet like hands to manipulate objects and food.
- Toco toucans take an estimated half of all hyacinth macaw eggs lost to predation, yet they disperse over 80 percent of the manduvi seeds that grow into the only trees the macaw can nest in. Hyacinth macaws have no feathers on the face patch and the bare skin flushes yellow when the bird is excited. Their bite force is among the strongest measured for any bird, and captive birds have been recorded shearing through broom handles.
