- When threatened, the Iberian Ribbed Newt can literally push its ribs through its skin to pierce predators and deliver toxins, all while healing these wounds with little lasting damage.
- Iberian Ribbed Newts can regenerate limbs, tails, and even parts of their heart and eye. They are also unique among amphibians for their rib-based defense mechanism. In captivity, they have been sent to space for research on vertebrate development.
