Jackson's Chameleon
Trioceros jacksonii
Trioceros jacksonii of the montane forests of Kenya and Tanzania is the "three-horned chameleon", and the horns are true bony structures covered in keratin, borne only by the males, who fight with them - two rivals lock horns and try to lever each other off a branch, a mode of cโฆ
Did you know?
- Jackson's Chameleons can project their tongues up to twice their body length to snatch insects with incredible accuracy.
- The entire Hawaiian population descends from about 36 chameleons released in one backyard in Kaneohe in 1972. Jackson's chameleons project the tongue in about 0.07 seconds, and the tongue accelerates faster than a car, powered by elastic recoil in collagen sheaths rather than by muscle contraction alone. Their eyes move independently and can each be aimed anywhere in a hemisphere, then snap forward together to give binocular range-finding the instant prey is spotted.
