- Japanese macaques were the first non-human animals observed to exhibit cultural behaviors, such as washing sweet potatoes in water before eating them.
- Japanese macaques are the northernmost-living non-human primates, and have been observed washing food and using hot springs—a rare behavior among wild monkeys. Their vocalizations are complex and varied, helping them communicate within their large social groups.
