Did you know?
- Japanese macaques were the first non-human animals observed to exhibit cultural behaviors, such as washing sweet potatoes in water before eating them.
- The hot-spring bathing macaques are effectively a cultural tradition confined to particular troops, and neighbouring groups with access to the same springs do not do it. Japanese macaques have been recorded using stones as tools in "stone handling" play behaviour that varies between troops with no obvious function - a candidate for non-functional culture. Their faces and rumps turn a vivid red in the breeding season, and redder females are preferred by males.
