- Despite their goat-like appearance, Japanese serows are more closely related to antelopes and are one of only a few goat-antelope species in the world.
- Japanese serows can climb steep, rocky slopes with ease thanks to their strong limbs and specialized hooves. Both males and females have short, backward-curved horns, which they use for defense and during territorial disputes. In Japan, the serow is so significant that it has been designated a 'Special Natural Monument' to ensure its protection.
