- Kakapos store large amounts of energy as fat, making them the world’s heaviest parrot species.
- The kakapo is the only flightless parrot, and the heaviest parrot in the world. Males boom for hours at a pitch low enough to carry for kilometres — but so hard to pinpoint that females struggle to find them. It breeds only in years when the rimu tree fruits heavily. Its defence is to freeze, which is useless against cats and stoats that hunt by smell — and the kakapo smells strongly sweet.
