- Despite their large and colorful bills, Keel-billed Toucans are surprisingly quiet, producing frog-like croaks rather than loud calls.
- Toucans regulate heat loss through the bill so precisely that a thermal camera shows it lighting up and cooling down within minutes as the bird's needs change. Despite the bill, toucans are poor fliers, flapping and gliding in an ungainly undulation, and rarely cross open country. Keel-billed toucans play "catch" with fruit, tossing berries to each other in the canopy, and groups will fence and spar bill-to-bill in social bouts.
