- Despite their terrestrial habits, Keeled Box Turtles are surprisingly good swimmers and will sometimes escape danger by diving into water.
- Keeled Box Turtles have a hinged plastron that allows them to close their shell completely for protection. They are mostly active during dawn and dusk, making them crepuscular. Their carapace color and ridges provide excellent camouflage among leaf litter in their forest habitats.
