- Unlike many lizards, the Keeled Earless Lizard has no external ear openings, helping to prevent sand from entering its ears while burrowing. Its keeled (ridged) scales give it a rough texture and aid in camouflage. This species is capable of rapid bursts of speed to evade predators.
