- The Keeshond was once known as the 'Dutch Barge Dog' due to its popularity as a companion and watchdog on canal boats in the Netherlands.
- Keeshonden are famous for their 'spectacles', the dark markings and shading around their eyes that give them a distinctive expression. They served as the symbol of the Dutch Patriot political party in the 18th century. Despite their thick coats, they are remarkably clean and have little doggy odor.
